The Birthday Standard
Colin the Caterpillar is more than just a chocolate roll cake. For many, it’s the non-negotiable centrepiece of a British birthday celebration, a role it has occupied since its launch in 1990. The core product has remained largely unchanged for over three decades.
The formula is simple and effective. A chocolate sponge with chocolate buttercream, covered in a milk chocolate shell, decorated with sugar-coated chocolate beans, and finished with its solid white chocolate face. While M&S has produced many seasonal and special editions over the years, the classic Colin remains a permanent fixture in its food halls. He is a national institution.
An Ever-Expanding Range
In recent years, the Colin the Caterpillar brand has expanded far beyond the original large cake. The name is now attached to a sprawling range of confectionery and baked goods, turning a single product into a significant sub-brand for Marks & Spencer.
The line-up includes smaller, individual portions like the Mini Colin the Caterpillar Cakes and snackable Colin the Caterpillar Softies. But the confectionery aisle is where the brand has truly multiplied. Shoppers can find Colin the Caterpillar Speckles, Cola Gums, Fruit Gums, and Cherry Gums. For those who prefer sour sweets, there are Sourtastic bags, Sour Stomps, and Fruit Sours. It is a huge portfolio.
A Lunchbox Crossover
This new design concept introduces another brand with a powerful childhood association: Capri-Sun. The mockup re-skins the standard Colin the Caterpillar box in the familiar silver and bright orange of Capri-Sun’s best-known flavour. The packaging design integrates the drink’s distinctive logo and an image of its iconic foil pouch.
It proposes an orange-flavoured cake, a departure from the typical all-chocolate base. While M&S has released limited-edition flavoured Colins before, a direct collaboration with a major soft-drink brand would be a new direction. The concept effectively merges two very different, but equally nostalgic, household names.
What the real range looks like
A Capri-Sun Orange cake would have to find a place in an enormous real-world product family. The current M&S Colin the Caterpillar range includes the classic cake, Mini Colin Cakes, and Softies, plus a huge confectionery line-up featuring Speckles, Cola Gums, Sourtastic bags, Fruit Gums, Sour Stomps, and Cherry Gums.
