Haribo Fried Eggs in a Half-Dozen Carton is a Genius Idea

The Breakfast of Champions

Some product ideas are so simple and so right they feel like they should already exist. This is one of them. A new design mockup places the iconic Haribo Fried Egg in the packaging it was born for: a classic, six-slot cardboard egg carton.

The presentation is flawless. Instead of a plastic bag, the concept uses a familiar pulp-fibre box, complete with Haribo branding and a clear window on the top. Each of the six depressions holds a single, oversized gummy egg. The format moves the sweet from a casual bag-for-sharing into something that feels more like a specific treat or a gift. It’s a small change that reframes the product entirely.

The Single-Sweet Strategy

Isolating one sweet from a popular mix is a proven strategy for Haribo. The company has a long history of taking a fan favourite and giving it a solo release. Giant Strawbs, once just one component of the Supermix bag, have been available on their own for years after proving their popularity. The same goes for Rotella, the blackcurrant wheels.

The Fried Egg is arguably the most fought-over piece in a bag of Starmix. It has a unique texture — part gummy, part foam — that sets it apart from the rings, bears, and hearts it shares a bag with. As a candidate for its own standalone product, it has more claim than almost any other sweet in the Haribo universe. This carton format, however, does something more interesting than just putting them in a different bag.

A 240g Format

The mockup specifies a 240g total weight. For comparison, a standard grab bag of Starmix is currently around 175g. This positions the carton as a larger, more substantial purchase. The ‘Half-Dozen’ name implies six large sweets, meaning each egg would weigh a hefty 40g. This is far larger than the standard Starmix version and pushes the product into the ‘giant’ category, similar to the existing Giant Strawbs.

While Haribo’s main range is defined by its plastic packaging, the brand does occasionally use different formats for seasonal products or special editions. A cardboard box is not without precedent, but using one to so cleverly mimic the packaging of the food it’s named after is a particularly smart piece of design.
