M&S Food Hall Experiments
Marks & Spencer’s food development is a formidable operation. The brand rarely stands still, constantly pushing new formats and flavour extensions across its aisles, from bakery to the chilled section. While much of the focus goes on its biggest character brands, the innovation happens everywhere.
Look at the dip selection, for example. It’s an area where new ideas can be tested quickly. The current M&S range includes a couple of novel formats under the ‘Flip Dip’ banner: a Red Pepper & Cream Cheese Dip and a Basil Dip with Pesto Drizzle. The core idea is a pot with two sections, allowing a customer to flip a topping or drizzle onto the main dip just before serving. It is a small but definite point of difference on a crowded shelf. It shows a willingness to tweak established formats.
A Classic Flavour Combination
Against that backdrop, a new flavour for its flagship Colin the Caterpillar brand feels less like a wild experiment and more like a logical next step. And the choice of flavour here is deeply traditional. Chocolate orange is one of the most established pairings in British confectionery, a combination that has endured for decades. There is nothing surprising about it. It’s a safe bet.
The mockup tub moves Colin into the freezer aisle, a space where the character already has a presence. This new version, however, specifies a ‘Zesty’ orange, suggesting a sharper citrus note than the usual sweet, chocolate-box flavour. The branding also specifies this is a ‘White Chocolate Party Edition’, implying a whole sub-range of alternative Colin flavours based around white chocolate. This feels like a very commercial move.
What the real range looks like
While the Zesty Chocolate Orange ice cream is a concept, the M&S savoury range shows a similar interest in new formats. Current products include the M&S Flip Dip Red Pepper & Cream Cheese Dip and the M&S Flip Dip Basil Dip with Pesto Drizzle, which feature a separate topping to be added by the customer.
