A new design imagines a collaboration between two genuinely distinctive brands: Cadbury and AG Barr. The mockup shows a standard Crunchie bar, but with its famous golden honeycomb centre infused with the flavour of Irn-Bru. The wrapper adopts the soft drink’s signature orange and blue colour scheme, with the Irn-Bru logo given almost equal prominence to the Crunchie wordmark.
It’s a straightforward proposition. The format is unchanged, but the flavour is a direct crossover from the drinks aisle. Cadbury has a long history of brand collaborations, most notably with Oreo and Daim, but has rarely partnered with a UK soft drink manufacturer for one of its core chocolate bars. This concept moves into that territory, pairing a UK-wide confectionery staple with a drink that has a fiercely loyal, and largely Scottish, following.
The Crunchie Range Today
The core Crunchie bar has remained largely untouched for decades. Parent company Mondelez has preferred to expand the brand through format changes and spin-offs, rather than by altering the honeycomb bar itself. The most significant variations are found in the frozen aisle, with the Cadbury Crunchie Ice Cream Cone, the tub-based Crunchie Blast Ice Cream, and the handheld Crunchie Mini Ice Cream Sticks.
Away from the freezer, diversification has been similarly cautious. Cadbury Crunchie Rocks are a sharing bag format, mixing chocolate, honeycomb pieces and cornflakes. The only other major variant is the Cadbury Dairy Milk Crunchie bar, which simply embeds pieces of the honeycomb into a standard Dairy Milk slab. An Irn-Bru edition would represent a major departure, introducing a co-branded flavour to the central product for the first time.
What the real range looks like
The current Cadbury Crunchie range focuses on format variations and frozen treats. Genuine products include Cadbury Crunchie Ice Cream Cones, Crunchie Blast Ice Cream, Crunchie Rocks bags, and a Dairy Milk bar with Crunchie pieces. A co-branded flavour like Irn-Bru would be a new direction for a brand that has kept its core honeycomb recipe consistent.
