A Confectionery Crossover
Brand collaborations are common, but a crossover between two direct competitors on the scale of Swizzels and Haribo is rare. This concept proposes exactly that. It places the five iconic sweets from Haribo’s Starmix into the format of Swizzels’ bestselling Squashies line.
Squashies launched in 2012, transforming the hard textures of classic Swizzels sweets like Drumsticks and Love Hearts into a soft, foamy format. The line has been a major success for the Derbyshire-based company, becoming a brand in its own right. This mockup pushes the format beyond Swizzels’ own intellectual property and into the territory of a genuine rival.
The Starmix Selection
A standard bag of Haribo Starmix contains a fixed, well-known lineup. There are Heart Throbs, Goldbears, Rings, Fried Eggs, and Cola Bottles. Each has a distinct shape and flavour profile, from the raspberry and pineapple of the hearts to the cola flavour of the bottles. Part of the product’s identity comes from this specific mix of shapes and textures.
The challenge for any real-world version would be translating these into a consistent Squashies format. While the flavours are straightforward, the shapes are integral to the Starmix brand. The mockup packet shows recognisable forms for the egg and the bottle, suggesting that each of the five original sweets would get its own foamy, ‘squashed’ equivalent.
The Current Squashies Range
The existing Squashies range is built around Swizzels’ own flavours and products. The core product, Squashies Original, combines the milk and raspberry flavours of a Drumstick lolly with the foam texture of a Love Heart. From there, the range has expanded into single flavours and further adaptations of other Swizzels sweets.
Current variants include Bubblegum, a Sour Cherry Apple flavour, and a Strawberry Cream edition. There are also versions based on other lollies, such as Splits Lollies and an Ice Cream flavour. A partnership with an external brand like Haribo would represent a completely new strategy for the line, moving it away from its Swizzels-centric roots for the first time.
What the real range looks like
The current Swizzels Squashies range includes Original, Bubblegum, Ice Cream, Splits Lollies, Strawberry Cream, and Sour Cherry Apple. A collaboration with an external brand like Haribo would be a first, placing it outside the existing strategy of adapting Swizzels’ own product lines.
